In the context of small businesses, describe the process of transportation.
What will be an ideal response?
Transportation involves the physical movement of a product from the seller to the purchaser. Because transportation costs are the largest item in distribution, there are many opportunities for savings and improved efficiency. The two most important aspects in terms of cost savings are choosing the transportation mode to be used and understanding delivery terms. Transportation modes are the methods used to take products from one place to another. A small producer has many choices of ways to move goods to and from its plant and/or warehouse, and each mode has advantages and disadvantages. Which mode is chosen depends on questions of speed, frequency, and dependability required, points served, capability (capacity, flexibility, and adaptability) to handle the particular product, and cost. Whether containers are used affects the choice of transportation system. Shipping can be an extremely burdensome task for small businesses, particularly if it is not a big part of operations.
