Discuss the drug-crime relationship

What will be an ideal response?

The relationship between drugs and crime is a convoluted one at best. The use and abuse of drugs and alcohol contributes to crime in a variety of ways. In the majority of street-crimes, seventy-five to eighty percent, drugs or alcohol are involved in the commission of the crime. The offender was either under-the-influence at the time of the crime, or the crime committed was a drug-related crime (for example, possession of a controlled substance). Drugs may be a prime motivator for the crime. The use of drugs or alcohol may also make crime more likely to happen. Drugs and alcohol serve as a disinhibitor to many crimes that are sexual in nature and violent as well. Heavy users of illegal substances are far more likely to engage in a lifestyle that brings them into contact with more criminals and more opportunities to break the law.
