The morphological chart provides more guidance to the design process than a brainstorming session in that the problem is first broken down into smaller parameters or subsystem functions. Once they are identified, solutions can be developed using brainstorming or lateral thinking. Then they are listed for accomplishing each function. Once all of the various options are listed, the designer can mix and match them to find an optimum system solution. With brainstorming, the problem is approached from a higher level. It might be more difficult to identify as many solutions and an optimum solution may not be readily apparent.

In the event of a design modification, the morphological chart would have more options for modifying parts of the design, while the brainstorming approach might only have different overall system solutions.
