Describe the origins and functions of the United Nations. Research the Internet and newspapers to find current articles about the United Nations, and explain the issues currently being addressed there. Has the United Nations been an effective peacekeeping institution?

What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER:
Students should describe the structure of the United Nations, with its General Assembly and Security Council. They should also recognize that the function of the United Nations is to address international problems and provide a forum to avoid war. Although throughout the Cold War era the United Nations did not effectively often stop or prevent war, it did send peacekeeping forces to quell conflicts.
