Choose three of the following groups and analyze their changing roles in American society after 1965: older people, organized labor, women, religious conservatives, blue-collar workers, and educated suburbanites
What will be an ideal response?
The ideal answer should include three of the following:
1. Older people sometimes were better able to save money after 1965, and definitely had better access to healthcare with Medicare
2. Organized labor did poorly as union membership dropped, and the benefits negotiated by unions were not as good as they used to be.
3. Women increased their participation in the workforce. They did not get the largest piece of social legislation passed, the ERA, but did get Title IX passed.
4. Religious conservatives gained in power and played a large role in electing Ronald Reagan.
5. Blue-collar workers lost power and well-paid work as manufacturing and industrial jobs went overseas, replaced by a lower-paying service economy.
6. Educated suburbanites played a significant role in electing Reagan and were a large voting bloc.
