(1) The centrality of language: Reality and our social actions are shaped by the written and spoken word. Language is not neutral but contains values and assumptions that define who we are, our interaction with others and the institutions of society, and our participation in them. (2) Partial knowledge and provisional truth: The meanings and actions of daily life are structured by language that is not neutral. Inescapably, most, if not all, forms of our understanding are limited and incomplete. “Knowledge” and “truth” are unquestionably partial and provisional. (3) Deconstruction, difference, and possibility: Postmodern methods emphasize the deconstruction of the written and spoken word in order to expose implicit and hidden assumptions located in specific narratives (e.g., the hidden and privileged political messages in certain court decisions). “Decoding” texts (language written or spoken) exposes how particular “truth claims” are accepted while others are dismissed or ignored. Postmodern criminological theory encompasses articulating the differences in language of all the voices involved in social interaction.

Martin was a member of a politically radical group known as the Weathermen. This group was a branch of a student society at school that advocated radical means to overthrow the government. Martin met with a group of his friends in an empty apartment building and decided to make some homemade pipe bombs to plant throughout the community. The plan included contacting a newspaper after the bombs were set off, identifying the group, and trying to convince people that the current government positions in various parts of the world were wrong. The bombs would be a way to terrorize others and bring attention to the Weathermen's cause in hopes of changing the international policies of promoting capitalism in the name of democracy. The plan failed as Martin and his group accidentally blew
themselves up. What crime theories could be applied to this scenario? What will be an ideal response?
