Line specimens- showcase a typeface, one line at a time. A line specimen can include any number of measures of type, and can display type style or size variations, or both. Sometimes the letters appear alphabetically. Other times they are arranged to spell words in English, Latin, or other languages. Content of text might change from line to line, or the same text might be repeated a number of times, or might appear as a series of headlines
Text block specimens-this type of specimen format has whole blocks of text are set in a variety of sizes and type styles to give a better sense of how they would compare with each other as body text.
Analytical specimens-this type of specimen conveys multiple kinds of information in a single layout.
Examples of type in use- This type of specimen is designed to show type for their utilitarian value, displaying specimens of the font in use. This method can also be a good marketing technique by not only by giving the customer ideas about how they can use your font but it can also reinforce any cultural or emotional associations you are hoping will be assigned to your font by viewers.
Specimen books- can range from short pamphlets to hardbound books. Content can focus on the details of a particular font family, or it can catalog all the offerings of a foundry
Artistic specimens- this type of specimen format incorporates type into an artistic format to emphasize the font’s expressive qualities, and to associate a marketable image with the typeface.
Online specimens- Many foundries have web sites where they display their wares, although the low resolution can rarely do justice to the detailed designs of typefaces. Digital specimens are much cheaper to produce than printed ones, and consumers can purchase and download the fonts directly from web sites without having to wait. In addition, elements of time, motion, and interactivity can add interest to the specimen’s layout, and can aid user navigation
Other innovative approaches-designers can come up with innovative and unique approaches to showcase their typeface designs, they need not limit themselves to previously used specimen formats.
