Answer: The IACP is aware of the issue and estimates of how often it occurs very widely. The exact prevalence of police officer battering is unknown for several reasons. Some departments have a zero-tolerance position, where others have less defined positions or no positions at all. That IACP recognizes that federal law prohibits police officers convicted of qualifying misdemeanor intimate partner violence from possessing firearms. Thus, if an officer is found guilty of intimate partner violence to criminal proceedings, he/she shall be terminated.
