Discuss the basic idea of comparable worth and the controversies associated with it

The basic idea of comparable worth is that people whose jobs make equivalent demands on them and that call for similar skills, education, or responsibility should receive roughly similar pay; in other words, equal pay for comparable worth. Comparable worth has been a highly controversial development, with opponents arguing that it is impossible to really compare the worth of different jobs and that the free market should determine what people are paid. These opponents argue that, if women are dissatisfied with the low pay in some jobs, they should compete for the higher-paying jobs. Some even suggest that such interference with market mechanisms would disrupt the whole economic system.
