When we analyze immigration through the lens of globalization, will this population movement continue? What does this perspective suggest?

What will be an ideal response?

Varies. Students should discuss that the population movement will continue because immigrants simply have no choice. It is unlikely that they can be stopped by further militarization of the border or by building bigger and taller walls. Immigrants come to the United States in such numbers, as they did in this past, because the alternatives in their home countries are unacceptable or nonexistence. This perspective suggests that the tendency to reject, demonize, and criminalize immigrants is self-defeating. Globalization allows for the free movement of goods and capital but not of people. It benefits transnational corporations and the mega-businesses that produce consumer goods but victimizes the vulnerable citizens of the less-developed nations. As long as these forms of globalization hold, the population pressure from South to North will continue.
