Discuss what happens with victims during the initial contact with police when a crime is reported. At each phase of this contact, discuss how this interaction with the police and the victim affects the victim’s perception of justice.
What will be an ideal response?
Office arrives at the scene of the crime and makes an initial investigation/report—contact in this phase could affect the trust in the relationship. After the initial interview, police provide transportation to a secure location or to medical attention—contact in this phase could affect the perception of care and/or concern. Depending on the nature of the crime there may be little contact with the police (minor property crime) to more intense (serious in nature), consistent contact in the investigation process. The way police conduct interviews in the ongoing investigation affects the victim’s perception of the investigation because the questions can seem irrelevant or unnecessarily personal.
