Frederick William was obsessed with having giants in his Potsdam Grenadier Guards, so he decided to breed giants to serve in his unit. He ordered that every tall man in the kingdom marry a tall, robust woman, expecting that the offspring would all be tall and that some would be giants. Unfortunately, his expectations fell far short of reality. Not only was his program slow (with humans, it takes 18 to 20 years to produce mature adults), but most of the children were actually shorter than their parents. This human breeding experiment ended shortly after the king's death in 1740.
