Describe the trends in total and per capita water use, energy consumption, and trash generation in the United States from 1950 to 2010. What do they indicate about resource use?
What will be an ideal response?
From 1950 until the late 1970, there was a rise in per capital use of water and energy. Since the late 1970 a decline in resource consumption per person can be seen in data from the United States on per capital water use, while per capital energy use has stabilized since the late 1980. Although per capital trash generation increased from the mid-1960 until 2010, since that date trash generation per capital has leveled off. These data indicate per capital consumption of resources is leveling off or declining, and that available supplies should be able to meet future demand.
