Explain how to administer external compressions for infants and children

What will be an ideal response?

For a child, locate the lower sternum using the same technique as for an adult. The bone structure of a child is more fragile than that of an adult, so the same amount of force is not needed to compress the sternum. Only the heel of one hand is used to compress the sternum 2.0 inches. The rate of compressions per minute for a child is 100. The ratio of breaths per compressions is 30:2 for a single rescuer and 15:2 for two rescuers.

An infant’s heart is located considerably higher in the chest than an adult’s; the hand position for compression for an infant is located at the midsternum right between the two nipples. The bone structure of an infant is even more delicate than a child’s; therefore, only the index and middle fingers of one hand are used to compress the midsternum 1.5 inches. The rate of compressions per minute for an infant is 100. The ratio of breaths per compressions is 30:2 for a single rescuer and 15:2 for two rescuers.
