Please explain the methods that can be employed by a paralegal or legal assistant to protect against breaches of confidentiality.

What will be an ideal response?

Much of what can be done to protect clients’ rights to have their information kept
confidential involves using common sense. Inside the law office, doors should be kept shut
when discussing client matters and phones should not be answered when the answerer is
already engaged in discussion with third parties. Computer screens should not be left unattended, passwords should be kept secret and regularly changed, and emails should be
sent encrypted, if at all, and even then only with the client’s permission. Outside the law
office, legal assistants should be vigilant against discussing client matters with anyone,
including family.
