What are the advantages and disadvantage of arranging student desks in rows and columns?

What will be an ideal response?

Correct Answer:
This arrangement increases on-task behavior and/or decreases off-task behavior when students are expected to work on their own. Teachers may be able to manage inappropriate behavior more effectively during independent seatwork by arranging students in rows and columns. This arrangement also facilitates the introduction of new materials and testing. This arrangement may not facilitate whole-class discussion because students seated in the front of the classroom will have a harder time hearing the contributions of their peers seated at the back. If students seated in rows are asked to engage in an activity with peers, this arrangement may result in a disruption of the lesson because students are not sure with whom they should work.
