What hormones are involved in the uterine/menstrual cycle? What role do they play?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Different stages of the menstruation are controlled by specific hormones which are produced during that stage. Stages of menstruation includes, Follicular stage, Ovulatory stage and Luteal stages.
During follicular stage Follicle stimulating hormone which are produced from the pituitory stimulates the development of ovarian follicles.
During ovulutary phase of menstruation, luteinising hormone stimulates ovulution ie. the release of eggs from ovary.
During the luteal phase, Progesterone is produced from the corpus luteum. Progesterone is a C21 steroid hormone produced by the ovaries (corpus luteum), placenta, and adrenal glands and plays important role in the menstrual cycle and in maintainance of early stages of pregnancy. Progesterone stimulates the growth of blood vessels that supply the lining of endometrium and stimulates glands in the endometrium to secrete nutrients that nourish the ovum. It also prepares the endometrium lining of the uterus for the binding of fertilised egg to implant and helps to maintain the endometrium throughout pregnancy.
