Discuss the history of probation

Answer: John Augustus was a boot maker in Boston and known as the Father of Probation. He became a volunteer probation officer when in 1841, he posted bail for a man who was "accused of being common drunk". Augustus requested from the judge, 3 weeks before sentencing the man; after which proving to the judge that the accused man had been reformed. The judge only required a small fee from the accused instead of jail time. He became a probation officer for about for about 95 people a year providing assistance with education, employment and housing. As more volunteers came in, they established as part of the system a rehabilitative way to address legal accusations and sentencing.
