It can be incorporated in one of three ways. First, it can be used as a standalone counseling approach. In most cases, it is brief (i.e., 3–5 sessions) but can be used longer as well. Second, it can be used initially to increase motivation and lower resistance with a client and then followed by other counseling approaches. Third, it can be used on “as needed” basis.
