Pilgrimage is an aspect of ritual life important for many Hindus, although few of them have the time or money to engage in it. The destination of a pilgrimage is often a river, the ocean, or a spring. But temples built on sacred mountains or in sacred cities are also places of pilgrimage. Doing puja in a place with a strong connection to the divine brings purification from sin and ritual impurity, gains merit, fulfills vows, leads to the betterment of one's next lives in this world, and even brings deliverance from the cycle of rebirth. Millions of pilgrims go to Varanasi on the Ganges River every year to wash their sins away in the water, and the Kumbh Mela festival is the largest religious pilgrimage in the world.
