Explain how sensation varies by culture.Give at least two examples.

What will be an ideal response?

Although sensory neurons and processes are generally the same among all ethnic groups, the ways in which we understand those neural impulses are culturally ascribed. The textbook gives an example of perception in the color spectrum.Salish Native North Americans, for example, do not differentiate between yellow and blue in the same ways that North Americans of European decent do. Our cultural experience affects the way we organize our visual inputs—even basic inputs like variations in color.Just as with vision, we can expect that perceptions of all of our senses likely vary. What is considered “sweet” in Alaska might not be considered sweet in the Middle East, for example. What younger and older people consider “loud music” likely varies as well.
