What is the process involved in testing the thermostat in the car?
What will be an ideal response?
On OBD II-equipped vehicles, a scan tool can be used to verify thermostat operation by reading coolant temperature. On older vehicles, a digital pyrometer or thermometer attachment with a hand-held multimeter can be used. Expect normal coolant operating temperature to be about 200F (70C) higher than the rated temperature of the thermostat. Put the thermometer into the coolant while the engine runs and observe it while the engine warms up. With the engine running, the coolant will begin to show signs of movement when the thermostat opens. Note the temperature at that point.
If the coolant begins to circulate at a temperature that is different than the rating of the thermostat, the thermostat is defective and must be replaced. If the temperature does not rise to the correct point, the thermostat could be stuck open or missing completely.
