Self-disclosures should be:

a. Lengthy if necessary; if it is important to pass along crucial personal information, it does not matter if the focus of the interview is temporarily shifted to the interviewer
b. At least tangentially related to the topic at hand; as long as the self-disclosure is somewhat related to the client's concerns, it will hopefully be beneficial
