Why is it so important to keep stakeholders informed in action research, and what are several ways the researcher can do this?
What will be an ideal response?
The goal of action research is to help a group of individuals to come to a solution to a particular problem through involving them in research. In order to involve the entire population, and avoid only representing a portion of the population's opinions, the researcher must keep all stakeholders involved during data collection, analysis, and after the study is completed. This can be difficult when there is a large population of stakeholders. During research, the investigator will create accounts of the activities as they develop. A way to keep other stakeholders, who are not actively involved in creating the accounts is to allow them to read the accounts and provide feedback. Then the investigator must share the results with participants using methods including:
• Focus groups
• In-group forums
• Informal meetings
• Agency
• Community group meetings
After the study is over, stakeholders must still be informed. This can be done with a written report as long as it is written in a way that is accessible to the average layperson. Meetings and presentations are more effective as methods. Technology can be used to communicate with large numbers of stakeholders by creating a project Web site, and posting a live presentation or a dramatic reenactment of situations uncovered in the research.
