Discuss Mayan culture through an examination of the City of Palenque and the tomb of Lord Pakal.

What will be an ideal response?

The sophistication of the Mayan cosmology is implemented in the Temple of Inscriptions and its architecture features. It rises in nine steps, representing the nine levels of the Mayan Underworld. These themes were incorporated into the design of the tomb of Lord Pakal. Pakal was buried in a large uterus-shaped stone sarcophagus, and his face was covered with a jade death mask. A small tube connected the tomb with the upper level, thus providing the dead king with an eternal source of fresh air and functioning as a form of communication between the living and the ancestor.
