Pro bono publico (“done without compensation for the public good”) is viewed as part of a lawyer’s obligation to ensure equal justice and reminds lawyers that their primary responsibility is to uphold the rule of law. There also is the practical consideration that providing legal representation promotes respect for lawyers and enhances confidence in the fairness of the legal system.
