Explain Braithwaite’s theory of shaming and reintegration.
What will be an ideal response?
Braithwaite believed that shaming is necessary for social control and for the offender. Braithwaite believed that offenders should be punished and pay for their crime; however, upon the completion of their sentence, the offender should be reconnected with the community. Once the consequences are completed, society has an ethical obligation to cease and desist from applying additional consequences to the offender; to continue to do so is unethical, disproportional, and unproductive. If society does not do this, society should not be surprised if a former offender returns to criminality.
