Distinguish between anticlines and synclines, domes and basins, anticlines and domes
What will be an ideal response?
Anticlines are upfolded arches of rock, whereas synclines are downfolded troughs of rock. The oldest rocks are in the core of an anticline and the outer edges of a syncline. Domes are broadly upwarped rock that produces a roughly circular-oval structure. Basins are the broadly downwarped structural equivalent. The oldest rocks are in the middle of a dome and the outer perimeter of a basin. Both anticlines and domes are upwardly deformed; however, anticlines are arches, sort of a 2D deformation, and domes are more like a helmet-shaped, 3D deformation.
