What is permafrost? How does it relate to carbon stores?
What will be an ideal response?
Permafrost is a layer of frozen soil that is as much as 500 meters (1,600 feet) thick in places. It is found in the tundra. Permafrost acts as a barrier that prevents drainage, so the soil above it remains perpetually waterlogged. The cool, anaerobic conditions in this soil slow decay, so organic remains can build up. Organic matter in permafrost makes the arctic tundra one of Earth's greatest stores of carbon.

What is a significant difference between X-linked and sex-influenced inheritances?
A) X-linked inheritance affects females and sex-influenced inheritance affects males. B) Sex-influenced inheritance requires epistasis. X-linked inheritance does not. C) There are no differences. They are the same. D) X-limited inheritance is only recessive. Sex-influenced inheritance can be recessive or dominant. E) In X-linked inheritance, the gene in question is on the X chromosome; in sex-influenced inheritance, the gene is autosomal.
Members of the plant family Cactaceae (cacti) are native to the Americas and thrive in dry environments. They have a number of specialized adaptations, including reduced leaves, succulent (fleshy) stems for water storage, and spines for defense against herbivores. Some members of the family Euphorbiaceae are native to the African desert and resemble cacti, having similarly reduced leaves, succulent stems, and thorns. Other species in the Euphorbeaceae do not have these traits. Based on this information, what can you say about the morphological traits of Cactaceae and Euphorbiaceae indicated above?
A. They are shared primitive traits. B. They are homologous traits. C. They are shared derived traits. D. They are analogous traits.
