What do rod and cone cells do in the eye?

What will be an ideal response?

Both are photoreceptors in the retina. Rods use the photo pigment rhodopsin to detect the brightness of the light. In humans, there are three different kinds of cones, each with visual pigments to detect red, green, or blue light. Color vision depends on which type(s) of cones are stimulated and how much.
