It could be because the company is sensitive to charges that it had cooperated too readily with the government in the past to violate customer’s security. It could also be that the company was committed to protecting privacy. A third likely explanation is that while Apple might not object to helping the U.S. government investigate terrorism, they would object to helping totalitarian government hack into dissidents’ phones. Support or opposition to Apples actions could take a variety of forms. Support would be for protection of privacy or that the FBI didn’t need their help. Opposition would be that Apple is obliged to help fight terrorism or should not be endangering the public just to protect their own image.
