What is the difference between a "closed shop" and a "union shop"? What is their legal status?
A closed shop requires the employer to hire only union members. A union shop permits the employer to hire nonunion members but requires the employee to become a union member within a specified time and to remain a member in good standing as a condition of employment. A closed shop is prohibited under the LMRA. States may prohibit union shops through right-to-work laws, but most states permit the existence of union shops.
