Describe and contrast the difference between hot and cold cognitions.

What will be an ideal response?

Hot cognitions are those that occur in affect-laden situations and cold cognitions occur in situations that are free from affective arousal or when clients appear to be detached from the emotional content of the situation. Thus, when clients are expressing strong affect, they are more likely to be experiencing hot cognitions. Accurately identifying automatic thoughts is much easier when clients are affectively aroused because they are less able to censor or provide an interpretation of their thoughts.
