Two metrics are used in specifying the thickness of steel sheet used for cold-formed steel (CFS) sections. What are those metrics and what is the relationship between them? Do we use both metrics in practice or one of the two? Which metric is more important?

The thickness of steel sheet for CFS members is specified in mils (1 mil = one thousandth of an inch = 0.001 in.). The other (older) metric is gauge. The mil and the gauge are in inverse relationship, i.e., the higher the gauge number, the thinner the sheet. In practice, both metrics are used, though the mil metric is more important.
