Why might one use the regional divisions of the country as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Department of Commerce in reporting on regional food patterns in America? What are the advantages?

The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Commerce list four regions with nine subdivisions for data collection purposes: Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. Although these categories group together states with distinctively different cuisines, such as Florida and Texas, or Alaska and Hawaii, most demographic and food consumption data are presented in this four-region format. It is useful for detecting broad trends, as long as results are not overgeneralized to smaller populations that may observe alternate regional boundaries.
