Explain how the diagnostic school and the functional school are different.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: The earliest influences of psychodynamic theory on the social work profession occurred in the late 1920s as the first social work scholars representing the diagnostic school drew upon Freudian ideas and espoused a medical model to individualized treatment with clients. In contrast, the functional school influenced by Virginia Robinson, Jesse Taft, Otto Rank and others operated from a psychology of growth, and emphasized a person’s creativity and will as an organizing force, as opposed to unconscious processes.
