Form
What will be an ideal response?
• The form is repetitive, created by stringing together "A" phrases, varied by a pair of "B" phrases.
• "These main motives [phrases] are the melodies one identifies with particular sanjanunes."
• The melodies of the selection come from playing the same or similar melodic phrases over and over again throughout the entire piece.
• The form is a series of double-couplets—the first 8-syllable line is stated and followed by a contrasting 8-syllable grouping; then, this entire couplet is repeated. The double-couplets are sometimes repeated exactly, or sometimes repeated with modifications—see Active Listening guide. In this example in addition to accompanying the solo male voice, the harpist and golpeador play (1) an instrumental introduction, (2) instrumental interludes between double-couplets, and (3) an instrumental ending.
