Declarative metacognition is explicit, conscious, factual knowledge. For example, a child can explain "what is" a fraction and a decimal. Procedural metacognition involves knowing "how to" do something. A child uses procedural metacognition to convert a fraction to a decimal by dividing. Conditional metacognition is knowing "when and why" to perform a strategy. Conditional metacognition relies on declarative and procedural knowledge. A child with conditional metacogntion can explain why it is sometimes more useful to represent a value as a decimal rather than a fraction.
