How might you argue that Russia's natural environment is one of its greatest assets, as well as one of its greatest liabilities?

What will be an ideal response?

As an asset, the environment has a wealth of resources, including oil, coal, and diamonds; the
region has numerous water resources, including rivers, lakes and seas that provide for fishing,
irrigation, and transportation. As a liability, the high latitudes and continental climate mean that
much of the region has either a very limited agricultural growing season, or it is too cold for any
agriculture; other parts of the region have very little precipitation, which also limits agriculture.
Russia's large geographic size makes transportation difficult, and lack of direct access to warm
water ports makes international trade more difficult.
