Answers should discuss the rationales regarding capital punishment as discussed in Table 11-4 in the text. Abolitionist arguments may include the concern regarding the execution of the innocent, a lack of proven deterrence, arbitrariness, discrimination, expense, and the view of human life as sacred. Retentionist arguments may include just deserts, revenge/retribution, and protection. The counterclaim for each argument the student presents should also be explained.
