Why do large synchronous generators use an exciter?
What will be an ideal response?
The magnitude of the output ac is controlled by the exciter current supplied to the field and the exciter output can easily be controlled as the load demand changes. In addition, the use of an exciter enables the main generator output to be taken from the stator, eliminating the need for slip rings and brushes in series with the output.
