Identify the main classes of drugs and provide one example of a specific drug that belongs to that category. Also describe the primary effects of each category of drug.

What will be an ideal response?

The major classes of drugs are opiates, depressants, stimulants, and psychedelics. Opiates include morphine, heroin, codeine, and OxyContin. Opiates result in pain relief, induce sleep, and produce feelings of euphoria. Depressants include alcohol, barbiturates, and benzodiazepines such as Valium, Xanax, and Rohypnol. Depressants produce calming and anxiety-reducing effects and reduce nervous system activity. Stimulants include cocaine, crack, caffeine, amphetamines (such as methamphetamine), and nicotine. Stimulants increase central nervous system arousal, resulting in alertness and a positive mood. Psychedelics include LSD, DMT, mescaline, ecstasy (MDMA), 2C-B, and PCP. Marijuana is often also categorized as a psychedelic drug. Psychedelics all produce sensory or perceptual distortions.
