Discuss the three ways communication technology transforms messages
What will be an ideal response?
First, the nature of messages are affected in that they may be more task related,
allow for focus on content over the identity of the sender, and attend less to closing
signatures (e-mail) than messages written in traditional forms. Second, the form of content
has changed with technology in that multiple threads in discussion boards lead to a loss of
coherence, but can also demonstrate visually how ideas chain out. Also, hyperlinks in
documents interrupt (both positively and negatively) traditional notions of text structure.
Finally, temporal aspects of content have changed. Certain media such as cell phones and
videoconferencing allow for synchronous (sender and receiver communicating at the same
time) communication, while other media such as fax and e-mail are asynchronous (sender
and receiver are communicating with a delay).
