Salespeople must do their homework in order to learn as much as possible about their potential customers. If the salespeople can determine the customer's likely needs and come up with a way that they might be able to satisfy those needs, their approach has a better chance of realizing a successful sale. The salespeople can also learn how to schedule their approach so that they will not likely catch the prospect at a busy time.
