Describe the tradeoff that exists between energy and water requirements for the production of uric acid and urea
What will be an ideal response?
Uric acid production requires a lot of energy but little water. It is excreted as crystals
mixed with just a tiny bit of water to produce a thick paste. Insects, birds and other reptiles use this form of excretion.
The mammalian liver combines two ammonia molecules with carbon dioxide to form urea. This takes less energy than converting it to uric acid. However, excreting urea requires twenty to thirty times more water than excreting uric acid.
