What is backward planning and curriculum mapping?

Curriculum mapping is looking at grade level standards and mapping out a plan from beginning to end and end to the beginning. Curriculum maps begin by analyzing content standards; this will help you generate topics or content to teach. Then you will identify the content by units and order of teaching.
Backward planning is looking at the instructional content units, analyzing the goals and objectives of these units, and unpacking them into knowledge and skills. Next, teachers will identify resources to help students meet the goals and objectives. Then teachers will develop assessments, which include performance tasks that are informal and formal with benchmarks during the unit.
