Self-expansion theory explains how identity influences the development of close relationships after first impressions. People seek to expand their self-identity; people enter into relationships to expand their identities; people in close relationships tend to merge identities. Relationship success depend on the ability of the relationship to expand the partners’ experiences and sense of self.
