Describe broadband LANs.

What will be an ideal response?

Broadband LANs, in contrast to baseband LANs, use multiple carriers to exchange information. Just like your cable television allows you to select one of many different channels, broadband LAN technology divides the available bandwidth of the cable system into multiple channels (frequency division multiplexing). A head-end is used to maintain communication with each node on the broadband network. The broadband information signal is varied in both amplitude and phase to encode the digital data. One 6-MHz channel is capable of providing 27 Mbps using an encoding technique called 64 QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation).

The IEEE 802.7 Standard describes broadband LAN operation. Broadband LAN cable technology is becoming increasingly popular in the home computing market due to its high speed compared to ordinary telephone modems.
