Why is it so important to employ the scientific method when studying sexuality?
What will be an ideal response?
Sexuality strongly affects the perceptions and emotions of humans. People tend to project their own morality, experiences, and opinions on sexuality in general. Therefore, the history of sex research has been known for researchers basing their conclusions on their own perspectives, without any systematic evidence. It can be very easy to declare a certain behavior pathological solely because it is out of the ordinary. The scientific method helps researchers stay objective and keep their own judgments and emotionality outside their area of work. By employing this method, sex research provides new insights that are not affected by social or religious norms and instead represent sole facts.
In addition, it is especially important for diagnosticians and practitioners to have objective tools(diagnostic manuals) when deciding on the “normality” or pathology of their patients’ sexuality.
