Explain how a moor peat pack is used
What will be an ideal response?
The pack is refrigerated until it is chilled, approximately 1 hour. It should not be frozen because that destroys the therapeutic properties of the mud. The peat pack is placed on the body so the side with the permeable material is touching the skin. Another cool pack, such as a gel pack, is placed on top of the peat pack to maximize the cooling effect. The packs are left in place for a maximum of 20 minutes; any longer than that and the body's tissues can be damaged by the cold.
To warm up the peat pack before application, a warm towel can be placed on it for 1 minute, but the pack should not be warmer than body temperature before it is applied; the pack loses some of its heat-penetrating abilities if it is too warm before being applied. After it is placed on the body, a piece of thick cloth such as flannel or a towel is placed over it, then another heat source–a heating pad, hydrocollator pad, warmed gel pack, or hot water bottle–is placed on top of the flannel. The peat pack is usually left in place for 20 to 30 minutes. If the heat becomes intolerable before 20 minutes is up, the pack should be removed immediately to prevent burning.
